What is emergency dentistry?

When it comes to your teeth, some problems can’t wait a week or month for a dental appointment.

Dental emergencies aren’t always clearly defined. A few situations that require immediate attention include:

  • Severe tooth pain or toothaches
  • Loose or painful teeth
  • Objects stuck in the teeth or mouth
  • Cracked, broken, or knocked-out teeth
  • Lost or loose fillings
  • Sore gums
  • Root canal therapy

If you experience trauma to your teeth or are in pain, it’s important to seek medical attention. The nerves in your teeth can become damaged and increase your risk of infection and additional pain.

What should I do if I lose a permanent tooth?

While you wait for your appointment with Dr. Abtahi, make sure to keep your tooth moist. Handle it as little as possible and try returning it to the socket. You can help hold it in place in the socket by biting down on gauze or a wet tea bag on the side of your mouth with the missing tooth.

If you can’t keep the tooth in place until your appointment, rinse it off and save it in a bit of milk or saliva until you are able to see Dr. Abtahi.

To reduce bleeding in your mouth, apply a cold, wet compress to the socket.

What if I have a severe toothache?

To manage toothache pain while you wait for your appointment with Dr. Abtahi, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean your teeth of any debris. If food is caught between your teeth, floss gently.

Aspirin and other pain relievers shouldn’t be applied to your teeth or gums. An ice pack or cool compress pressed against the area might provide temporary relief.

What services does an emergency dentist offer?

Depending on your dental emergency, Dr. Abtahi can provide a variety of emergency services, including:

  • Root canal to remove the infected pulp of a tooth
  • Dental crowns to protect damaged teeth
  • Dental fillings to repair decay or damage

If you have a dental emergency, call Your Community Smile to schedule a same-day appointment, or simply walk in if you’re nearby. Online booking is also available for less urgent needs.
